The Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) profoundly influenced the region’s social and cultural landscape, including its musical expression.
Yet, the role of songs in reflecting the military conflict, as well as the geopolitical tensions and aspirations it generated, remains largely underexplored. Analyzing song lyrics offers an alternative lens through which to understand the conflict, one that goes beyond traditional historical narratives. While history books often recount events through the lens of military operations, political developments, or diplomatic maneuvers, this research takes a different approach. I seek to understand history through the lyrics of songs, examined in tandem with the biographies and lived experiences of the artists who created them. What socio-political insights can these songs reveal?

Walid Hedari is a researcher specializing in songs related to the Lebanese Civil War. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alicante in Spain. Born in Lebanon at the tail end of the civil war, and having studied music at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), he has long nurtured a deep interest in history, politics, and music. The idea of exploring history and politics through the lens of song emerged while he was completing his master’s degree. Although conducting such research in Lebanon would have presented significant challenges, pursuing his studies abroad ultimately made this work possible.
