My name is Elina Burg, I have been fortunate to call Baku, Moscow, Calgary, London and Madrid home. I am originally from Baku, Azerbaijan where my grandparents moved to from Georgia and Russia after the October Revolution, in search of a better life. In addition (to add more spice!) my husband is from Turkey. So the idea of the migrating birds story came naturally when I wanted to explain to our children why people move to new countries. The story is about a colourful migrating bird called Guldenstadt’s Redstart that is found in the Caucasus, Southern and Central Asia. My own life journey has taken my family around the world, so this is a story very close to my heart. I hope my book will help children understand change in their own lives as well as they find delight with the illustrations and text. I hope this poem will appeal to many people. Throughout history people have moved from one place to another being driven by different reasons. I believe that we should remember where we have come from as well as be thankful for what we’ve got now. Be respectful and cherish the different cultures that make up the community we all live in.
